I have often pondered on why some Christians wear a cross around their neck or plant a cross in their garden. Some say the cross is cursed, so why would you like to display it? It made me think, what does the cross mean to me personally? What does it symbolise in our life?
For me, it is a symbol of the only true key to abundant life. It is a symbol of Christ’s self-giving love. All my sins were on Him when He took my punishment and gave me His resurrected life in return. It is the symbol of true love. John 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” KJV. Foolishness for those who do not comprehend: 1 Cor. 1:18 “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” KJV
The cross symbolises not only what Christ has done for us, but also the humble bearing of the cross in our daily life.
There are many who display the cross for all to see, but their lives show nothing of the self- sacrificial spirit of the cross. Everyone needs a Calvary in their hearts. Salvation is free and immediate if we come to the cross, but the anointing (that breaks the yoke) comes with a great cost to ourselves. We must die to ourselves. Daily take up our cross and follow Jesus. Luke 9:23 “And he said to them all, If any person wills to come after Me, let him deny himself [disown himself, forget, lose sight of himself and his own interests, refuse and give up himself] and take up his cross daily and follow Me [cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also.] “AMP
So yes, the cross I love and the cross I will bear. A constant reminder of the free gift I received and the daily price I should pay. Gal 6:14 “But far be it from me to glory [in anything or anyone] except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah), through whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world! ”AMP
